Web Tips

Contacts:

  • Use department email addresses rather than individual email addresses whenever possible:
Ex. “If you find any mistakes on the site please contact webmaster@sctech.edu
  • Use universal titles with phone numbers, rather than specific names when possible/appropriate:
Ex. “If you encounter a catastrophic issue with the website please call the Webmaster: 555-555-5555″
  • List/provide phone numbers in the format: “###-###-###”. No ( )’s, no spaces, just 2 dashes:
This consistent formatting allows for linkification for easy, one click dialing on mobile devices: Ex. 555-555-5555.
Clickable phone number links are also beneficial for accessibility.

URLs:

  • Provide direct links to pages being referenced rather than ‘click on this on the left, then click on that at the bottom’ style instructions: (This may not be possible for sub-pages on Banner Web, but this should apply to any of our public website (old.sctech.edu) pages, and most other sites).
Ex. “For the latest employee news and resources, please visit News Across the Crescent“.
This is more clear, more accessible, and there usually is no “on the left side of the page” on mobile devices because elements get stacked rather than being side-by-side columns..
  • Use the name/title or purpose/description of the page as the link text. Never use “click Here
Ex. “”For the latest employee news and resources, please visit News Across the Crescent.”
Or, “Keep up to date with the latest News and Resources for Employees“.
This is required for accessibility compliance.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING

What Employees Need to Know About DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing

This publication was produced by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to assist safety-sensitive employees subject to workplace drug & alcohol testing in understanding the requirements of 49 CFR Part 40 and certain DOT agency regulations.

Read the required educational materials: What Employees Need To Know About DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing.

FMCSA Substance Abuse Professionals

If an employee’s DOT drug and alcohol test comes back positive, the next step is an evaluation with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).

Search our directory to find SAPs near you: List of Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs).

Concur Tip: Time Report Submission
    1. Employees MUST submit travel within 60 days of trip completion to prevent travel reimbursement from being reported as taxable income.
    2. The system will flag a traveler’s expense report with lots of warnings, such as the exceptions shown above!
    3. These exceptions only serve as warnings, they do not prevent report submission and no one is keeping track of the number of report exceptions an employee has received.
    4. Be prepared to see these warnings before actually reaching the 30 or 45 day mark. We are aware the system is doing this, this will not prevent you from submitting your report.

Safety Tip of the Week

  • Never leave personal property unattended in your classroom . Take your possessions with you.

Accessibility Tips

Tip #1:  The three colors from the SCTC logo are not accessibility compliant when used in combination as text/font color and background color.

Example:  <SCTC-logo-blue> colored text with <SCTC-logo-green> colored  background will not meet contrast requirements.  Example Text (non-compliant).

The background color should be adjusted to a much lighter shade of green in order to increase the contrast.  Example Text (compliant).

Accessibility Do’s and Don’t

In Office documents:

Do: Use tables to represent tabular data in word documents, and other office documents like PowerPoint.

Example of formatting using a table: (This is example data for illustration purposes, not actual events)

Event Example Day Example Time Example Location Example
Student Achievement Luncheon Monday, April 2nd, 2018 10:00am Library
Book Buyback Wednesday, April 11th, 2018 1:00pm Bookstore
Public Speaking Tips Thursday, April 18th, 2018 2:00pm Event Center
Graduation Workshop Tuesday, April 24th, 2018 10:00am Event Center
Math Tutoring Monday, April 30th, 2018 11:00am Tutoring Center

Don’t: Use tabs to align tabular data. Using tabs to format data is exclusively a convention to help people see the data. This doesn’t help anyone who can’t see the alignment structure. To support assistive technology, an actual table with cells and headers should be used. Tables are also easier to visually process compared to tab aligned formatting.

Example of tab aligned data, with formatting characters shown: (This is example data for illustration purposes, not actual events)
An illustration of tabular data formatted using the tab key.

How-To: In your Office document go to the “Insert” tab and select “Table”. You can either define a number of rows and columns or you can insert a table from an existing Excel document.
